FoT ’26 Song

[Intro] (spoken, soft — bass and brushes only)
Pull up a chair. The room is already talking.
Fifteen years of voices and the question’s still walking —
what is the future of augmented thought?
Let us ask it again. Let’s first look at what the ancients taught us.

[Verse 1 — the ancients]
Plato by the river, watching ink learn to stay,
asked: is the written word a cure, or does the memory decay?
A pharmakon, he named it — the remedy and the curse in one breath —
do our tools give us a mind, or just a clever shadow of death?
Aristotle pressed a thought like a seal into the wax;
We can ask, when the mind needs more room — tell me, where does the thinking go?

[Hook]
What becomes of thought when you hand it a tool?
A key, or a cage? The sage, or the fool?
From the wax to the wire to the room made of light,
ask it deeper, ask it kinder, ask it all through the night.
What is the future of augmented thought?
Come and ask it with us — bring your questions and your thoughts.

[Verse 2 — the dreamers of machines]
Leibniz wanted a language so true you could settle every fight —
“let us just calculate,” and the world would come out right.
Lovelace at the engine saw it weaving like a loom,
asked: can it only follow — or can it make something bloom?
Bush dreamed up a desk that remembered all you’d read,
a trail through every notion, every link ever held.
Licklider shook its hand — not a servant, not a god,
but a symbiosis, partners, human heart and metal nod.
And Engelbart never asked it to be smart;
he asked us to grow greater. Augment the human heart,
the collective intelligence to meet the urgent and the vast.
Bootstrap the way we better. Lift the future from the past.
And Nelson said it plain: it’s all deeply inter-twingled, so —

[Hook]
What becomes of thought when you hand it a tool?
A key, or a cage? The sage, or the fool?
From the wax to the wire to the room made of light,
ask it deeper, ask it kinder, ask it all through the night.

[Bridge — the artists] (trumpet swells, half-time)
But hush — let the painters and the poets take the floor.
Blake said cleanse the doors of perception, see the infinite, and more.
Coleridge in a reverie built a palace out of sound;
the Surrealists shut their eyes, let the deeper voice come round —
automatic, unguarded, the hand before the thought.
Is that augmentation too? The mind the maker never caught.
And Borges, oh, Borges gave a person a flawless recall,
and it crushed him — every leaf, every hour, he remembered it all.
So is total memory a heaven, or a weight we shouldn’t hold?
And Valéry foresaw it: art summoned like the water, cold,
delivered to your room with a gesture, with a sign —
the future arrived early. And the question’s still online.

[Verse 3 — now, and us]
McLuhan whispered the medium reshapes the very mind it feeds.
Arendt asked the hardest one: are we thinking what we do, our deeds?
Now the machine answers back — it drafts, it dreams, it replies,
so the oldest question’s new again, just dressed in different eyes:
when thought finds a partner, do we deepen, or grow thin?
Where do we keep the friction, and where do we let it in?
This is not a lecture. This is the river. This is the fire.
This is fifteen years of asking, and it only climbs higher, it only goes deeper.

[Final Hook]
What becomes of thought when you hand it a tool?
A key, or a cage? The sage, or the fool?
From the wax to the wire to the room made of light —
the future of augmented thought is a conversation, and it continues…

[Outro] (spoken, intimate — bass walking out)
So come.
Bring your question. Bring the one you can’t quite phrase.
The dialog is deep here. The dialog’s ablaze.
The Future of Augmented Thought —
not a screen we answer to,
but a room full of minds…
and the chair we kept for you.
